Community REDD Working Area : Kayarkhola watershed is located in Chitwan district of the central development region of Nepal. This watershed area consists of lower Tropical to lower Sub-tropical forests, covering the altitudinal ranges from 300m to 1200m. The watershed consists of social and ethnic diversity of the forest dependent indigenous communities i.e. Chepang and Tamang. These ethnic groups are few of the most marginalized ethnic groups in the country. Chepang and Tamang communities practice shifting cultivation which puts severe pressure on forest resources. This pilot project will play a major role to address the issues of forest degradation and deforestation by promoting sustainable forest management practices by linking it with REDD incentive mechanism.
The watershed area consists of 16 CFUGs. The forest in the watershed has been divided into two strata, namely dense and sparse; each has been allocated 154 and 26 permanent sample plots respectively for the purpose of monitoring carbon.
