Project Management Unit – PMU

With a view to facilitate and operate regular REDD+ activities in the field and institutionalizing forest carbon trust fund, Project Management Unit of the REDD pilot project has been set up and officially running since July 2010. PMU is handled by the coordinator recruited by ICIMOD and project focal persons from two project partners namely Asia Network for Sustainable Agriculture Bio-resources- ANSAB and Federation of Community Forest Users’ Nepal will also be placed in PMU.

By its functions, PMU will be the focal point for project partners and civil societies in Nepal to take it further in terms of continuing with REDD and REDD+ activities in Nepal. The PMU also coordinate project partners and provide strategic and technical support to implement field activities. It is further coordinates national government agencies and stakeholders working in REDD initiatives. Similarly, one of the PMU’s key roles is to enhance civil society organizations in Nepal to ensure their full and meaningful participation in REDD+ strategy formulation process whereby promote equitable, fair and transparent way of benefit distribution to local communities focusing to indigenous peoples, women, dalits and poor. It acts as central level data center thereby compiles forest carbon data reported by individual community forest group through REDD network. It then facilitates carbon data registration such that provide data to forest carbon trust fund operating body for seed grant regulating to local communities. More specifically the functions of PMU are as follows.

  • Coordinate and manage project field and operational activities on behalf of ICIMOD
  • Focal point for partners and civil society organizations for REDD+ initiative
  • Provide technical and strategic supports to partners while implementing project activities
  • Facilitate to establish Carbon Trust Fund and the Carbon Data registry centre
  • Data generation, management and dissemination (REDD+) : Data HUB
  • Maintain experiences and lessons to create it learning piece for ICIMOD as well as for all stakeholders
  • Coordinate and promote cooperation with government stakeholders in REDD+ initiative in Nepal
